Tips For Finding And Fixing Pulsation Errors In Your Metering Pipeline System

Posted on: 25 March 2016

Having an inaccurate reading from your metering pipeline system can cost your company a lot of money. When there is an error found, you need to find the problem that is causing the error quickly so you can get it repaired. Some causes of these errors is problems with pulsation. Below are some causes of errors you may receive, as well as how to repair them.

Reduce Noise and Sound Pressure

If there are high sound and noise levels, they can damage your metering equipment, such as control valve accessories, control valves, and regulators.  The vibrations that come with high sound and noise levels can cause even bigger pulsation problems. You should measure your noise levels periodically so you can determine if you need to reduce them. You should keep the regular noise level below 110 dBA. There are things you can do to quiet down the pulsation including:

  • Install insulation around equipment and pipes
  • Install heavier wall pipes
  • Install silencers for loud equipment
  • Look for any broken equipment, and either repair or replace any you find

Check Your Software

You should check your software's root mean square deviation. This is something that you could easily fix yourself. You will rarely find meter readings that are identical but they should at least be within the same range. You can find this range in your software's root mean square deviation, which is a formula that the computer program uses to predict the variance between the meter readings. If you find that the software's variant does not match with your meter, then you or someone else has likely entered an incorrect figure somewhere. Look through the inputs you entered into the software and make sure it matches the variables with your metering system. These variables include things like the outside temperature and the line's pitch.

Install Pulsation Control Devices

If you find that the pulsation is very high within the pipeline, you can replace the pipes, but this is very expensive. Instead. You can install pulsation control devices.  Some types of pulsation control devices you can choose are tuneable side branch absorbers, dynamic variable orifices, and performance augmentation networks.

The best type of pulsation control device for you depends on things like the type of parts you have installed downstream and upstream the flow meter. If you are not sure what to choose for you, contact a metering repair company, like Industrial Measurement & Control, to help you.

Finding and eliminating any pulsation errors you find will result in your system becoming more precise and accurate.
